With latest update to Windows Phone Preview for Developers (Windows Phone 8.1 Beta), windows phones get an update to an app called Device Hub.
With Nokia Device Hub Beta, it helps to connect to and access your devices easily. Many wireless headsets, Internet capable Smart TVs, Blu-Ray Players and Computers are supported. Nokia Device Hub also recommends Windows Phone applications which work with your devices. Pin a device to the home screen to get easy access to all the apps which work with it.
Nokia announced Device hub long before but, with new update to my Lumia, I thought to write this post now. This was rolled out as beta and in Windows Phone 8.1, with the Cyan Update, it will be available as one of the phone settings.
Opening Nokia Device hub app, it shows two section. Near by and my devices. First one searches for new devices to connect to and next show the previously used device.
How to use Device hub in Nokia Lumia Windows Phones?
When connected to a device, Device hub show apps that can be used with that device. Say when you are connected to a PC, and have PhotoBeamer App installed in your Windows Phone, then it will suggest to use Photo Beamer app to share photo from Nokia Lumia to PC.
So, when connected to a device, will will further show two section
This shows the status of the device along with list of apps that you can use to connect with the PC.
So for example, if you have the photo beamer app installed on the phone, you can see this listed. It is also possible to pin this device to start screen if you interact with it often.
This section shows the list of apps that can interact with the device. For PC, it listed Remote Desktop, Office Remote, Team viewer and so on.
Tap on any of the apps and you can start using that as you use the app regularly. However the apps aren’t specific to the device all the time. So for example, if you launch the remote desktop app, you still need to go through the settings and connect to PC like you would have done using the app alone.
Every device you connect with, the last location is registered with it. This helps you remember if it was your office or your home or anywhere else. Sadly there is no option to rename it as of now.
How to Download Nokia Device Hub Beta?
While you cannot download it from the store, its available via system app updates. Today we saw extras + info, display, network+ and others getting an update. Device hub will be right there when you start updating them. If you cannot see, make sure to check your updates manually see here for Device Hub Beta on Windows Phone Store.
